Sgt. Brandon Stubbs of the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard renders honors to Gunner, a 13-year-old mount of the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard on Aug. 23 at Fort Riley. Gunner died Aug. 16 after complications from colic. The CGMCG hosted a memorial in honor of Gunner at the unit’s stables.  Photo by: Amanda Kim Stairrett, POST.

Capt. Casey Wolfe, foreground, speaks during his assumption of command ceremony July 26 at the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard headquarters at Fort Riley.  He was wounded while serving as a platoon leader for Commando Troop, 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division in Regional Command-South, Afghanistan and spent 11 months recovering from wounds at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio.  He was medically released to return to duty in November 2011.

Doberdruk, a World War II veteran who fought during the Battle of the Bulge, visited the CGMCG troopers while in the area from Ohio visiting family.  “I don’t know why you’re treating me special,” Doberdruk said.  “My service for me was a great honor and great privilege.  …  I’ll never forget this day.” Doberdruk also attended the Army and “Big Red One” birthday cake cutting ceremony June 11.

Sgt. Kevin Lee, Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard, interacts with horses that were tamed as part of the Kansas Wild Horse Program Jan. 11 in Hutchinson, Kan.  Troopers and NCOs with the CGMCG and some of their spouses traveled to the Hutchinson Correctional Facility for the visit.  Since 2001, the facility has teamed with the Bureau of Land Management to serve as a regional holding and training facility for wild horses removed from public lands.
