Sgt. 1st Class John S. Stephens, 41, died when his vehicle was struck by an explosive charge during combat operations March 15, 2007 in Tikrit, Iraq.

He was a health care specialist with a transition team from the 1st Infantry Division.

Stephens was assigned to 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment prior to deploying with the transition team.

Stephens' home of record is La Grande, Ore.

He entered the Army in April 1985 and began serving in the 1st Infantry Division in December 2004.

This was Stephens' second deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

This incident brings the number of Fort Riley Soldiers who have died while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to 85.
