Sgt. Daniel M. Shepherd, 23, of Elyria, Ohio, died Aug. 15, Ar Ramadi, Iraq when the vehicle he was traveling in hit an improvised explosive device.

Shepherd was a Bradley commander with Fort Riley's Company A, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division.

He enlisted into the Army in July of 2000.

Shepherd had been stationed at Fort Riley since December 2000 and deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in September 2003.

The incident is under investigation.

Approximately 4,600 Fort Riley Soldiers are currently deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. This incident brings the number of Fort Riley Soldiers who have died while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to 40.
