1st Lt. Neil A. Santoriello, Killed Aug. 13, 2004

1st Lt. Neil A. Santoriello, 24, of Verona, Penn., died Aug. 13, Khalidiyah, Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his mounted reconnaissance patrol.

Santoriello was a platoon leader for Fort Riley's Company A, 1st Battalion, 34th Armor, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division.

He was commissioned into the Army in June of 2002.

Santoriello had been stationed at Fort Riley since March 2003 and deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in Sept. 2003.

The incident is under investigation.

Approximately, 4,600 Fort Riley Soldiers are currently deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. This incident brings the number of Fort Riley Soldiers who have died while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to 39.
