Spc. Jerry W. Mills Jr., 23, of Arkansas City, Kan., was killed Nov. 29 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV while the unit was conducting combat operations in Taji, Iraq.

Mills was assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 13th Armor as a tanker. He enlisted in the Army in June 2001 and arrived at Fort Riley in November 2001. This was Mills' second deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Mills was posthumously promoted to a Sergeant.

Approximately 3,700 Fort Riley Soldiers are currently deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. This incident brings the number of Fort Riley active duty Soldiers who have died while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to 60.
