Sgt. Travis A. Moothart, Killed Jan. 27, 2004

Three Fort Riley Soldiers were killed in an improvised explosive device attack in Khalidiyah, east of Ar Ramadi, Jan. 27.

The Soldiers were assigned to the 1st Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division. Killed were:

Cpt. Matthew J. August, 28, of Rhode Island, was the commander of Company B. He joined the Army in May 1997 and had been stationed at Fort Riley since June 2002.

Sgt. 1st Class James T. Hoffman, 41, of Whitesburg, Ky., was the first sergeant of Company B. He joined the Army in November 1984 and had been stationed at Fort Riley since November 2001.

Sgt. Travis A. Moothart, 23, of Brownsville, Ore., was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company as a Light Wheeled Vehicle Repairman. He joined the Army in April 2000 and had been stationed at Fort Riley since October 2001.

All three Soldiers deployed to Iraq in September 2003.

Fort Riley commanders, Soldiers, civilian employees and Family Readiness Groups are providing ongoing assistance to all Families of Soldiers supporting the war effort and are prepared to continue around the clock assistance throughout this operation.
