Pvt. 2 Luis Moreno, Killed Jan. 29, 2004

The Department of Defense announced that Pvt. 2 Luis Moreno, 19, of Bronx, N.Y., died Jan. 29, at a medical treatment facility at Lakenheath Medical Treatment Facility in the United Kingdom of wounds he received Jan. 23, in Baghdad, Iraq.

Moreno was assigned to Battery A, 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. He joined the Army in January 2003 and has been stationed at Fort Riley since August 2003. He was assigned to the unit as cannon crewmember and deployed to Iraq in September 2003.

Moreno was shot while on dismounted guard at a gas station. He died of his injuries. The incident is under investigation.

He is the 25th Fort Riley Soldier who has died while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Fort Riley commanders, Soldiers, civilian employees and Family Readiness Groups are providing ongoing assistance to all families of Soldiers supporting the war effort and are prepared to continue around the clock assistance throughout this operation.
