Pfc. Benjamin Tollefson, 22, of Concord, Calif., died Dec. 31 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with indirect fire in Ghazaliya.

He was an infantryman assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan. This was his first deployment in support of the war on terror.

Tollefson came into the Army August 2007. He was assigned to Fort Riley in March 2008.

To date, 159 Fort Riley servicemembers have died while serving in support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.

Tollefson was listed as a Pvt. 2 and Department of The Army notified Fort Riley Public Affairs Office that he was posthumously promoted to a Private First Class.
