Capt. Mark N. Stubenhofer, Killed Dec. 7, 2004

Capt. Mark N. Stubenhofer, 30, of Springfield, Va., was killed Dec. 7, in Baghdad, Iraq by small arms fire during a dismounted patrol.

Stubenhofer was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 41st Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, as the company commander.

He was commissioned into the Army in May 1996.

Stubenhofer had been stationed at Fort Riley since March 2001 and deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in June 2004. Stubenhofer had a previous tour in Iraq in 2003.

The incident is under investigation.

Approximately 4,100 Fort Riley Soldiers are currently deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. This incident brings the number of Fort Riley Soldiers who have died while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to 43.
