Sgt. Lorenzo Ponce Ruiz, Killed Oct. 12, 2005

Sgt. Lorenzo Ponce Ruiz, 26, of El Paso, Texas, was killed Oct. 12 near Balad, Iraq, when the HMMWV he was riding in rolled over.

Ponce Ruiz was assigned to the 24th Transportation Company, 541st Maintenance Battalion. His military occupational specialty was a heavy vehicle driver.

He enlisted into the Army in September 2001. He came to Fort Riley in March 2002.

This was Ponce Ruiz's second deployment to Iraq.

The incident is under investigation.

Approximately 3,700 Fort Riley Soldiers are currently deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. This incident brings the number of Fort Riley active duty Soldiers who have died while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom
