Pvt. 2 Anthony Michael Mazzarella, Killed Jul. 5, 2005

Pvt. 2 Anthony Michael Mazzarella, 22, of Blue Springs, Mo., was killed July 5 in Taji, Iraq, when the HMMWV he was riding in rolled over.

Mazzarella was assigned as gunner of an Up-Armored HMMWV with Company B, 1st Battalion, 13th Armor, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division.

He enlisted into the Army in May 2003.

Mazzarella had been stationed at Fort Riley since October 2004. He deployed in March 2005 for his first rotation to Iraq.

The incident is under investigation.

Approximately 3,600 Fort Riley Soldiers are currently deployed to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. This incident brings the number of Fort Riley Soldiers who have died while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to 54.
