FORT RILEY, Kan. – A Soldier assigned to the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, was killed May 13 during combat operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sgt. Amaru Aguilar, 26, of Miami, Fla., died from wounds received from small arms fire in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Inf. Div.

Aguilar arrived at Fort Riley in August 2009. He was a cavalry scout who deployed twice to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He deployed to Afghanistan with his current unit in March 2011.

To date, 176 Fort Riley Soldiers, Airmen and Sailors have died while serving in support of the Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.
