1st Infantry Division Soldier dies in Afghanistan

FORT RILEY, Kan. – A 1st Infantry Division Soldier died Nov. 16 in Paktika Province, Afghanistan.


Spc. Joseph Richardson, 23, was killed when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.


Richardson was an infantryman assigned to 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.


Richardson was originally from Booneville, Ark. and arrived to the unit in October 2008. He had previously served one tour to Iraq with the Big Red One.


This was his first deployment to Afghanistan.


To date, 208 Fort Riley Soldiers, Airmen and Sailors have died while serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.
