COMMUNITY CORNER - Hiring Heroes Career Fair chance to reintegrate into civilian life

By Col. Andrew Cole | GARRISON COMMANDER | April 22, 2014

As garrison commander, I remain committed, as well as the entire garrison community, to provide opportunities and services for our Soldiers with the reintegration into civilian life. Fort Riley strives to create a quality of life commensurate with the service of our Soldiers and their families.

The Veterans Opportunity to Work, or VOW, Hire Heroes Act has assisted thousands of veterans in their transition into the private sector. Our Soldiers are working hard to become ready to accept those challenges of the civilian workplace. These Soldiers come with a skill set that is transferable to the civilian sector.

The 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley and our civilian partners recognize the leadership qualities and diverse abilities our veterans and family members have acquired through their service to our country.

Additional assistance through the Soldier for Life program has guided veterans into the private sector through their focus on three pillars: Education, employment and health care. These three pillars are helping Soldiers reintegrate into civilian life with more resources than ever before.

This year, the Hiring Heroes Career Fair will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 23 at Riley’s Conference Center, located at 446 Seitz Drive. There will be more than 75 employers interested in hiring Soldiers.

The event will be a great opportunity to network with employers from the Department of Defense, other federal agencies and private sector firms with positions available. Wounded, ill, injured and transitioning service members, veterans, their spouses and primary caregivers are all welcome to attend.

A mobile site will be available to those interested in applying for federal positions. Along with the mobile site, Army Career and Alumni Program staff will be readily available to assist with federal job applications via

The event is a great opportunity for those wanting to start their careers in the private sector or federal government. Making connections and networking with employers at this event will help in the interview process and future employment. For more information, call 785-239-9435.
