RESILIENCE SKILL OF THE MONTH - Activating event, thoughts, consequences


Separating events from thoughts and their consequences sounds very complex. The Activating Event, Thoughts and Consequences model is an approved Army resilience training skill.

The purpose of this skill is to be able to identify your thoughts about an event and the consequences of those thoughts. Understanding that you have control over your thoughts provides greater control over the emotions and reactions we experience.

The ATC model begins with an activating event. These are the facts regarding a situation -- the who, what, when and where of a situation. It could be a larger challenge or adversity, such as being notified of orders to a new duty station, or small, like receiving an email from a co-worker. Activating events trigger heat of the moment thoughts. These thoughts are raw and uncensored, and are what we say to ourselves immediately following an activating event.

These thoughts drive immediate emotions and reactions, what we feel and do, and can lead to productive or counterproductive outcomes.

It can seem as though these emotions and reactions are fueled by the situations we encounter on a daily basis, but as the ATC model shows, it is really the thoughts we have about the events that drive our consequences.

• Letting down people on your team

• Hectic schedule

• Getting chewed out

• Receiving a promotion

• Finances

• Success

• Success or failures

Separating thoughts we have in the heat of the moment regarding these situations allows us to gain more self-awareness and understand the way we view the world.

If we can learn more about how we think, we can adjust our thinking to become more productive and resilient.
