Early Separation: Chapter 5-16 College Drop

By | DHR.Educ | July 24, 2013

The purpose of a College drop is to allow for a soldier to separate from the service early to attend a specific term at a college, university, vocational school or technical school.

Soldiers may be discharged or released from Active Duty for the Convenience of the Government, anywhere from 10 days prior to class start date up to 90 days before ETS.

Soldier must not be mission essential to their assigned organization, as determined by Command.

Review AR 635-200 for full eligibility requirements.

Because of the length of time it may take to collect necessary documents, it is recommended that you start the process at least 180 days prior to intended separation date. See an education counselor for a pre-separation briefing regarding your MGIB and Post 9-11 benefits and to receive a VA memo as required for your College Drop package.

While each Command’s procedures for processing College Drop packages may vary, we offer a template DA Form 4187.
