Victory Fighting Championship Fight Night July 12

By Amanda Kim Stairrett, 1st Inf. Div. Public Affairs Office | July 11, 2014

Members of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley Modern Army Combatives Program will showcase their skills Saturday during the Victory Fighting Championship Fight Night.
The main event is a bout between Gregg Van De Creek and Joe Wilk, both professional fighters based out of Manhattan. Wilk is a civilian instructor in the post’s combatives program. Both he and Van De Creek, a local firefighter, are set to fight in front of hometown crowds.
“Bringing the event to Fort Riley gives us a chance to show off our hard work on our home turf,” Wilk said. “It's always important to me to perform in front of the people closest to me.”
According to its official website, the Victory Fighting Championship is the premier mixed martial arts organization within the Midwest. It is considered one of only a few true key feeder shows for the highest levels of MMA.
“I fight for a lot of reasons, but this one is all about gaining support for the Fort Riley Combatives Program,” Wilk said. “The more people that come out to see us, the better the chances of them supporting our team and program.”
Van De Creek and Wilk aren’t the only familiar faces Flint Hills fight fans will see July 12. Soldiers with the combatives program are also set to fill the undercard in a series of amateur bouts.
Many of these Soldiers took top honors at the May 17 U.S. National Pankration Championships in Temecula, California. The fighters placed first in the 169- and 220-pound weight classes and second in the 136-, 145- and 156-pound weight classes, qualifying them for the world championships in Budapest, Hungary, later this year.
The Victory Fighting Championship Fight Night begins 7 p.m. July 12 at Fort Riley’s King Field House at 202 Custer Ave. Doors open at 6 p.m.
Tickets purchased in advance are $10 for the first 200 Department of Defense cardholders and $20 for other DOD cardholders. Tickets for non-DOD cardholders are $25, and all tickets purchased at the door are $30 each. VIP tickets are also available for $50.
