An Oregon Trail Marker providing a brief history of St. Mary’s role during the westward expansion is located on U.S. Highway 24 near the entrance to the college. When gold was found in the west in 1847 to 1857, settlers and gold miners were eager to start a new life. As they traveled down the Independence branch of the Oregon-California Trail, one of the final stops they’d make was at a small settlement later incorporated into the town of St. Mary’s on 1869.
