Black Lion Soldier dies in Afghanistan

FORT RILEY, Kan. – Pfc. Jesus Jonathan Lopez, 22, of San Bernardino, Calif., was killed Aug. 1 in Paktika Province, Afghanistan when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device.
Lopez was an infantryman assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, which is currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Lopez joined the Army in May 2011. He arrived at Fort Riley in August 2011. This was his first deployment. His awards include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one campaign star.
To date, 203 Fort Riley Soldiers, Airmen and Sailors have died while serving in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.
