'Ranger' Battalion Soldier dies in Afghanistan

FORT RILEY, Kan. – A Fort Riley Soldier was killed by enemy forces Nov. 9 in eastern Afghanistan.
Capt. James D. Nehl, 37, of Gardiner, Ore. died in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was an infantry officer assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.
This was his first deployment to Afghanistan. He also previously deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
To date, 205 Fort Riley Soldiers, Airmen and Sailors have died while serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn.
