Resources exist for DoD civilians facing furlough

A possible administrative furlough would impact many civilian employees at the installation, and Fort Riley's command group is taking every step to prepare.
"Leadership on Fort Riley has emphasized the importance of open, transparent communication about the current fiscal situation and possible administrative furlough," said Callie McDiffett, human resource specialist, CPAC. "Commanders have held several town halls, and more will likely follow as we get closer to a possible furlough."
An administrative furlough is a planned event by an agency, which is designed to absorb reductions needed by downsizing, reduced funding, lack of work or any budget situation other than a lapse in appropriations, according to the Office of Personnel Management website.
If civilian employees are furloughed, some employees may experience a financial hardship. The Employee Assistance Program can be a helpful resource for civilian employees.
"EAP offers short-term, problem-solving, counseling in a variety of areas and referrals as needed," McDiffett said.
The EAP can provide assistance in areas, including marital issues, financial planning, stress management and more.
"We want to make sure that employees know the (EAP) is available," she said.
Having knowledge of the resources and information available will help civilian employees prepare for what may lie ahead, McDiffett said.
"I think the key points are probably making sure (civilian employees) have the resources they need, making sure they know that the leadership on the installation is being as supportive as they can, and, also, relaying information as they get it," McDiffett said.
The OPM website has published several informational resources for civilian employees with more questions.
"We encourage all civilian employees to spend some time reviewing this information and to check the website regularly," she said.

The CPAC website also will be updated to include furlough information. Employees can access the website at www.riley.army.mil/UnitPage.aspx?unit=CPAC.
