Fort Riley Marina's Fun in the Sun is the embodiment of good, Family fun, said Travis Engle, recreation programmer, Outdoor Recreation, Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
Engle helped to coordinate the third annual Fun in the Sun event May 11 at the Fort Riley Marina.
Free activities included boat rides, games and canoe/kayak use. Food also was available for Soldiers and their Families.
The marina opened April 26, but the Fun in the Sun event is the real kick off to summer, Engle said.
"The event is really the official opening of the marina for the season," Engle said, adding it helps Families learn about the area and everything that is available to them.
"The lake (water level) is coming up, and the marina is looking really good," Engle said.
About 800 people attended Fun in the Sun.
Families and children seemed to be very happy about the activities and the event as a whole, Engle said.
"(My favorite thing was) play in the bouncy house because I like to bounce," said Cecilia Alquinta, 8, Eisenhower Elementary School, Junction City.
"I like the slide and the bouncy house," added Cecilia's brother, Gabe Alquinta, 4.
"And, the candy, I would imagine," said Chrissie Alquinta, attendee and Fort Bori, Va., native. "We're going to get something to eat and then we're going to do the boat rides, too."
The free boat ride was the highlight of the event for one Family.
"Today, we did some boat riding as a Family because I have all the girls here with me today," said Kasey Donoho, military spouse and Beaumont, Texas, native. "They loved (the boat ride). They put on their life jackets and they took us around the lake and then came back."
They are definitely boat girls, she added with a smile.
The marina is located at 7112 Highway 82 and offers rentals to Department of Defense ID cardholders. For more information about the Fort Riley Marina, call 785-463-5253 or 785-307-3798.
