Brig. Gen. John S. Kolasheski, deputy commanding general for maneuver, 1st Infantry Division, takes the 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Inf. Div., colors from Col. Matthew R. Lewis, outgoing commander of the “Demon” brigade, during the brigade’s change of command ceremony July 8 at Fort Riley’s Cavalry Parade Field.  Kolasheski then transferred the colors, along with command of 1st CAB, to the brigade’s incoming commander, Col. John M. Cyrulik, a recent graduate of the U.S. Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama.

A formation of six aircraft from the 1st CAB, 1st Inf. Div., take off June 25 from Marshall Army Airfield at Fort Riley, Kansas, as part of a final flight for Col. Matthew Lewis, then the brigade’s commander, who piloted the lead UH-60 Black Hawk alongside Chief Warrant Officer 4 Osbourne Ferguson. Lewis handed command of the “Demon” brigade to Col. John M. Cyrulik July 8 at Fort Riley. Lewis is set to serve as deputy commander of the Combat Readiness Center at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

The ‘fini flight’ tradition dates back to World War II when military aviators reach a career milestone, particularly when a commander departs or retires and has his or her final flight.
