Brigadier, UK Christopher Ghika, Deputy Commanding General (Readiness)

Brigadier Christopher Ghika was born in London and, as the son of a military father, spent his early life in a variety of places in southern England.

He was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1993 and joined 1st Battalion Irish Guards, a single battalion infantry regiment in the Guards Division. As a platoon commander, company operations officer and regimental signals officer, Brigadier Ghika was stationed in London and on two separate tours conducted anti terrorist operations in Northern Ireland. He attended the Army Junior Division of the Staff College in 1997. Following this course, the Battalion were posted to Germany and it was from there that he deployed as Adjutant to take part in the NATO entry into Kosovo in 1999.

Following his tour as Adjutant, Brigadier Ghika deployed for six months as a UN Military Observer to Sierra Leone during the civil war in 2000. On completion of the tour, he served for eighteen months as an infantry company commander in England before being selected for the Joint Services Staff College course from 2001-2003. On completion of the course, he spent two years in the Ministry of Defence as the desk officer responsible for the size of the Army before returning to Germany to command an armoured infantry company which included a tour in Baghdad and Basra in 2007.

At the end of this tour, Brigadier Ghika returned to the UK to become Military Assistant to the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff in the Ministry of Defence from 2008-2010. Battalion command followed this post, which included a tour in Helmand Province, Afghanistan from 2010-2011. He spent fifteen months working on Army personnel policy in 2012-13 before being selected to be Deputy Commanding General - Readiness -- DCGR (US) 1ID.

He is married with two children and lives in Fort Riley. He is interested in most things, but has a strong enthusiasm for military history, skiing and riding.
