COL David Miller received an ROTC commission as an Infantry officer, earned a BS in forestry from the University of Montana and entered active military service in 1986.
His first assignment was with the 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division (Mech), FRG from 1987-89. He served as a Bradley Infantry Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer and Battalion S4, (Logistics), Officer.
From 1990 to 1994 he was assigned to the 9th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division (Light), Fort Ord CA and Fort Lewis, WA. He served as Brigade and Battalion Assistant Operations Officer, Commander "A" Company 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment and Commander HHC 9th Infantry Regiment.
From 1994 to 1997 he was assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia, as a Small Group Instructor for Tactics at the Infantry Officer Advanced course and as Commander "A" Company 2nd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, (Infantry Officer Basic Course).
In 1998, he was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division, LI, Fort Drum, NY, where he served as Battalion Operations Officer and Battalion Executive Officer for 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment. This assignment included participation in Operation Joint Endeavor, SFOR 6.
COL Miller served as the Army Operations Readiness Officer, Operations and Plans Directorate (J3), US Joint Forces Command, Norfolk, VA from Jun 2000 to Jun 2002.
COL Miller commanded 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, (LI), "Golden Dragons" from August 2002 to June 2005. The BN deployed for SFOR 11 and OIF II.
He served as the Deputy Commander of the Operations Group, at the Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, LA from Jun 2006 to Jun 2007.
COL Miller commanded 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, LI, Fort Drum, NY from December, 2007 to May 2011. The BCT held the Global Response Force mission for one year and deployed Baghdad, Iraq in support of OIF 09-10 the transition to Operation New Dawn.
He last served as the Deputy Commander, Brigade Modernization Command, Army Capabilities Integration Center, at Fort Bliss, TX from June 2011 to June 2013. He is currently the Chief of Staff, 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One), FT Riley, KS.
COL Miller's military education includes the Infantry Officers Basic and Advanced course, The Command and General Staff College, the Armed Forces Staff College, and the Army War College. He holds a MS in Administration from Central Michigan University and a MS in Strategic Studies from the Army War College.
COL Miller's awards and decorations include: the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Expert Infantryman's Badge, Ranger Tab, Parachutist Badge,The Legion of Merit (OLC), the Bronze Star (OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (OLC), Army Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, The GWOT-E and -S medal, NATO Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Overseas Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with OLC, Army Service Medal, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, The Valorous Unit Award(2OLC) and the Meritorious Unit Award (OLC).
He is married and has two children.
